Prediction Markets vs Sportsbooks: Prices, Fees and Access
A prediction market sells shares in a result; a sportsbook sells odds on it. Both pay out if you are right. The price, the cost and who is allowed in differ a lot, and so does what happens to your USDT.

Prediction markets vs sportsbooks: one price, two ways
Take a share priced at 44¢ that pays $1 if Bayern win: about the chance in Shuffle's 2.29 on the same result.
- Prediction market share
- 44¢pays $1 if Bayern win, so 44¢ means a 44% chance
- Sportsbook odds
- 2.29pays 2.29 per 1 staked, a 43.67% chance
- The share as odds
- 2.271 divided by 0.44, close to Shuffle's price
To turn a share price into decimal odds, divide 1 by it. To turn odds into a share price, divide 1 by the odds. More in betting odds explained.
What it costs: a prediction market fee vs a sportsbook margin
Polymarket's own sports fee on 100 shares, against the margins measured on Bayern Munich v Arsenal.
- Sportsbook, highest margin7.08%Sportbet.one on Bayern v Arsenal
- Sportsbook, lowest margin3.67%Shuffle on the same match
- Polymarket, a share at 44¢2.8%$1.23 fee on 100 shares, $44 spent
- Polymarket, a share at 90¢0.5%$0.45 fee on 100 shares, $90 spent
- Polymarket, placing an orderNo feemakers are never charged
The fee is not the whole cost. On a prediction market you also pay the gap between the buy and sell price, and a sportsbook's margin is spread across every result of the market, so the two are not a perfect match.
Who can use prediction markets and sportsbooks
Access is where the two differ most.
- Kalshi
A US exchange regulated by the CFTC, for eligible US residents only.
- Polymarket: no new trades
The UK, the US, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and other countries can only close existing positions.
- Polymarket: website only
Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands and South Korea are close-only on the website; Malta for sports only.
- USDT sportsbooks
Each book lists its own blocked countries in its terms; see crypto sportsbook licences.
Polymarket rejects orders from the countries on its restricted list.
Using USDT on a prediction market vs a sportsbook
A USDT sportsbook keeps your balance in USDT. Polymarket turns it into its own dollar token.
- Step 1
Send USDT
Polymarket takes USDT from Tron (minimum $9), Ethereum ($7), BNB Smart Chain, Solana, Polygon and others ($2).
- Step 2
It is swapped
The deposit is bridged and converted to pUSD, Polymarket's dollar token on Polygon.
- Step 3
You trade in pUSD
Every price and fee is in dollars.
- Step 4
Withdraw
Polymarket charges no fee of its own to withdraw USDC; the bridge may.
At a sportsbook the USDT you send is the USDT you bet with, on the network you choose; see USDT betting sites.
USDT sportsbooks with their own prediction markets
Four of the ten books run a predictions tab beside the sportsbook.
- Dexsport
Markets on crypto prices, the economy and politics. One bet there meets its deposit rule.
- BC.Game
A separate tab for markets on events outside sport.
- Rainbet
A tab for markets on events outside sport.
- Roobet
A separate section for markets outside sport.
These are run by the book, at the book's prices, with your USDT balance.
Prediction markets vs sportsbooks FAQ

Yes. It takes USDT from Tron and other networks and converts it to pUSD.

No. Kalshi is for eligible US residents.

Some do. Dexsport, BC.Game, Rainbet and Roobet run their own.
